Movies to Kickoff the Summer (Películas para dar Inicio al Verano)

Watching or waiting

Summer is here! Well… partially ´cause we´re not on vacations or at least not in Mexico -and I don´t have vacations anyway-, but technically speaking Summer has just begun and with it the summer blockbuster movie season -or at least that´s how it’s supposed to go-

Anyhow, this month at least, there are more than 2 movies that I really want to watch, and some others that… I´m still thinking about.

And as always just a friendly reminder that this since I live in Mexico, this is the Mexican release schedule, so… with nothing else to address, on to the list:

Summer Loving Books

Calling my name

It´s been a really long time since I last wrote anything on this blog, so long that honestly, I don´t know if there´s still people reading it or are interested in it, but be it there or not I´m finally back!

summer-reading-part-twoAnyhow, reasons for not having written anything I got plenty – work, health, trips, etc.-, but if I´m really honest with myself it really has to do with my lack of organization skills -I´m still working on that!-, but the point is that I´m finally back and ready to quick off the summer with some fun, loving and maybe one and other mystery.

So…. here are my book picks for June!

Books Pouring Down On Me

Calling my name

Once again I´m late with my reading list -this is starting to be the norm now-, but at least I have already finished the first of my  April picks so…. not everything is lost, right?

books-rain-window-favim-com-3591441Anyway last month I was able to read almost all of my March picks -I didn´t read my Spanish book pick-, so let’s hope this month I can do at least as good if not better than March.

So…. for this month the books, I also tried to choose books that had something to do with the things celebrated in April -which were surprisingly plenty- such as kid´s day, book´s day and Gabriel García Márquez -a Colombian journalist, writer, etc.- birthday.

Anyhow, without any further ado, to the list:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.- Expanding the Wizarding World (Expandiendo el Mundo Mágico)

Movie Thoughts

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is back! Except, this time there´s no Harry Potter so… I guess it would be better to say that the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling is back, and while I have read and seen all of the Harry Potter books -at least the original 7- and movies, I wouldn´t consider myself a fan fan.

41899I mean I like Harry Potter, and for a time there I was kind of obsessed with it -to the point I read lots of fanfics-, but… if I compare myself to other people I know, who actually read the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book -which is you know, a sort of  encyclopedia-, I´m not that much of a fan.

Anyway, I make this clarification, because if you´re reading my thoughts on this movie, expecting me to sing it praises; chances are you´re going to be disappointed.

Don´t get me wrong! I enjoyed the movie, but… let´s just say that I won´t be running to the movie theater in order to watch it again. And while I didn´t exactly love the movie -like many seem to have done-, I did find it interesting and I can´t wait to see more about it just… maybe not from Newt Scamander´s hands?

¡No me mal entiendan!

Doctor Strange: Forget Everything you Knew (Olvida Todo lo Que Conocías)

Movie Thoughts

Full disclosure, I´m not a big Doctor Strange fan, I know who he is -mainly because of the cartoons and some other comics-, and while I enjoy and love the character -at least what I have seen of him in other comic books and events-, for some strange reason -you see what I did there- I have never been able to get into his comics.

doctor-strange-magic-178841That being said, from the moment I saw Benedict Cumberbatch on BBC´s Sherlock, I knew he would be perfect for the role, so… when he was announced as Dr. Steven Strange, it was like a dream come true.

So… needless to say that I had really high expectations for this movie and those expectations made me worry because if Age Of Ultron and Batman V Superman taught me anything, it was that expectations can make a movie seem worse than it really is.

Therefore, just like with Suicide Squad, I told myself to lower my expectations; and hope at the very least for a movie as good as Ant-man -which I liked a lot, but if we´re honest isn´t Guardians of The Galaxy or Captain America: The Winter Soldier-, so I was pleasantly surprised when Doctor Strange not only met my expectations but also exceeded them!

Ms. Peregrine´s Home for Peculiar Children: Weird and Not in a Good Way (Raro y No de una Buena Forma)

aaMovie Thoughts

A week before the premiere of Miss Peregrine´s Home for Peculiar Children, a friend and I challenged each other to read the book before the movie was available at our local cinema. And against all predictions, I did it! I managed to finish the book in 1 week!

13427816_919377058170829_673881796579582196_n

Unfortunately, my friend didn´t finish the book on time, and then well there was work, other engagements, etc., that didn´t allow us to watch the movie until last weekend when we finally managed to watch it! Although all things considered… I think it would have been a better idea to watch it before reading the book ´cause… everything seems to point out that the book that I read and the one the production read were totally different.

And is not like I didn´t enjoy the movie! Except it kind of is and believe me when I tell you that the fact that I didnpt like it goes beyond me being upset about the changes made, ´cause usually I don´t have issues with the, and in some cases -Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries- I have  thought of them as an improvement.

But sadly, Miss Peregrine´s Home for Peculiar Children it´s not the case, or at least not in my opinion and here´s why.

Tarquin Jenkins and the Book of Dreams by Peter Ford

Loved it-hated it

Be careful what you wish for, ´cause you might get it all.

It might sound like a cliche, but honestly speaking I would bet that was what passed through Tarquin´s mind more than once through Tarquin Jenkins and The Book of Dreams, as it was pretty much the first thing that came to my mind after reading this book; one that once again I had the opportunity to read thanks to @Booktasters and the author himself.

Which is why  I´m ashamed to admit that this review has been way overdue, -´cause I got this book a couple of months ago- and I´m just now writing about it; something that hasn´t been for lack of trying!, except it kind o has. Because while I was initially interested in the book due to its concept -a history loving geek traveling through time!-, reading it turned out to be quite difficult. Star Trek Beyond (Sin Límites).-Más Allá de la Frontera

Movies

Star Trek! I love Star Trek! And it´s finally in my country! In fact, I think I´m one of the few who openly enjoy both Star Trek and Star Wars -I seriously don´t understand why people have a problem with this, the only things they have in common are space  and space ships-, so yeah… as you can see, I´m pretty excited.

¡Star Trek! !Amo Star Trek!

And while I watched some episodes of the original TV series in reruns -thanks to my cable system-, I have to admit that it wasn´t until I saw the J.J. Abrams movies that I fell in I love with this universe; so much that I started reading the comics right after watching his movies.
