October Books to Trick or Treat

Calling my name

catholics-and-halloweenTake out the bats, pumpkins, black cats and all of the candy! ‘Cause Halloween is pretty much here! And since last year I couldn’t make my TBR list, this year I decided to go full on and read as many books as possible.

So this month is all about monsters and things that bump in the night, with one exception which though not about monsters is kind of relevant to October’s celebrations.

Anyhow, without furder ado, here are my picks for this month’s monstrous read:

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 Episode 12 “The Real Deal”.- All I Ever Wanted and More!

agents-shieldHow is it possible for a series to get better and better, season after season?!
I mean usually is the other way around and shows that used to be great just go downhill -I´m looking at you Arrow, Pretty Little Liars, The Flash, etc.-

But then again maybe that´s it, since is no secret that season 1 of S.H.I.E.L.D. was terrible. I mean yeah, it got better after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the whole Hydra reveal, but honestly, considering the standard ´til then, that wasn´t saying much.

I guess, that what I´m trying to say is that S.H.I.E.L.D. had pretty much hit rock bottom so…, I guess the only thing left for the show to do was to go up, and that´s precisely what they did! Season after season.

Season 2 for example, must be the best whole season ever, season 3 was pretty solid -´til the second part with the whole Hive thing-; season´s 4 second half was definitely the best and season 5…, season 5 is giving us everything it has to give, so yeah, the show just keeps improving.

Therefore…, as you can imagine, I was super hyped for the famous 100th episode. And all the videos posted on Youtube to commemorate this -best fights, romantic moments, stunts, lines, etc.- did nothing to bring it down! so… did it live up to the hype?

Descendants 2,- Those you Leave Behind

1I pretty much started this blog with a Descendants review, so I guess it makes sense that I´d finally return to it after watching Descendants 2, which premiered via Disney Channel pretty much 2 weeks ago.

So… as some of you might know, I´m a big Disney fan -which includes the Disney Channel-, so I usually watch all the of its DCOMs –Disney Channel Original Movies– more than once, and while I have liked some other movies that have come out since Descendants –Invisible Sister, The Swap– I have to admit that Descendants was still my favorite.

Therefore you can imagine how anxious I was to watch the promised sequel, especially when the heists were so high, ´cause sequels always have it difficult, since they not only have to live up to the hype of the previous movie but also ideally do better.

So… How did Descendants 2 do?

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.- Expanding the Wizarding World (Expandiendo el Mundo Mágico)

Movie Thoughts

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is back! Except, this time there´s no Harry Potter so… I guess it would be better to say that the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling is back, and while I have read and seen all of the Harry Potter books -at least the original 7- and movies, I wouldn´t consider myself a fan fan.

41899I mean I like Harry Potter, and for a time there I was kind of obsessed with it -to the point I read lots of fanfics-, but… if I compare myself to other people I know, who actually read the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book -which is you know, a sort of  encyclopedia-, I´m not that much of a fan.

Anyway, I make this clarification, because if you´re reading my thoughts on this movie, expecting me to sing it praises; chances are you´re going to be disappointed.

En fin, hago eta aclaración porque, sí estas leyendo mis pensamiento sobre esta película esperando que le cante elogios; probablemente seas decepcionado.

Don´t get me wrong! I enjoyed the movie, but… let´s just say that I won´t be running to the movie theater in order to watch it again. And while I didn´t exactly love the movie -like many seem to have done-, I did find it interesting and I can´t wait to see more about it just… maybe not from Newt Scamander´s hands?

¡No me mal entiendan!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 Episode 5 “Lockup”.- Who you gonna call?

Nows04e05_313When there´s something strange in your prison block, who you gonna call? Ghost Rider! Or at least that´s who S.H.I.E.L.D. is calling, ´cause this week Robbie Reyes kicked some spirits asses back to hell -or wherever they belong-, while doing a prison break with our core S.H.I.E.L.D. team, which… is back!

Well…, sort of ´cause Daisy insists on being her emo self and plans to bail when all this ghost business is done, and after what happened this week, I doubt the director will let our core team hang out together and do what they please without severe consequences. And after what happened, I can understand that -I don´t like it but yeah, I get it-.

Anyway, last week I didn´t have the time to review this episode, and I was planning to do it this week before Lockup premiered but… life what can you do, so I´ll try to focus on this episode and maybe mention some things from the previous one, so… let´s begin.

Halloween & Día de Muertos Books Whispering to me

Calling my name

I usually dedicate this section to the books I really, really wish to read. The ones that keep teasing me with their synopsis and Goodreads keeps on pushing my way.  But since I have only written 2 posts in this section -not counting this one-, I have decided to
do something a little different and make a sort of book list per month -or 2 months-.

I have sort of done something like this in my comic book posts, so… the rules to apply here will be kind of similar.

capturaAnyway, in this instance, I decided to go with books that gave me a kind of Halloween and Día de Muertos feeling, ´cause that´s basically October and November -at least in regards to festivities-  are all about in my country if you leave the 20 de noviembre behind -revolutions day-

And I know that October is almost over, but this just makes it more fun to see if at least I´ll manage to finish one book in a week, right?

Anyhow, these are my  October-November picks -warning I don´t like horror-:

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 Episode 3 “Uprising”.- Into the Shadows

Remember how I praised last week´s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Well… this weeks episode wasn´t that good, I mean it wasn´t bad, not at all but; compared to the LORENZO JAMES HENRIEprevious two. Let´s just say it kind of slowed down -just like I feared-.

And I guess I should have expected it -and I kind of did?- ´cause there are more or less 22 episodes on a traditional TV series, and there are just some many revelations and bombs, the show can throw around before burning through all of its storylines so… I guess it´s OK.

And that was in great part thanks to this episode being heavy in Yo-yo, who is turning out to be by far my favorite addition to AoS. Don´t get me wrong! I´m totally on board with Robbie Reyes aka Ghost Rider, but… Yo-yo! Yo-yo is amazing! Fresh and entertaining to watch. She also feels -at least to me- as a real part of the series and not just a guest or especial appearance so… yeah I love whenever I see her on my screen.

Anyway… on to Uprising, the 3rd episode that had to be put off ´til this week for… the vice presidential debate?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 Episode 2 “Meet the New Boss”.- Something Spooky here it Comes

aos401_0198 I loved this episode! I loved so much that I can´t help but wonder why it took me so long to write about it?

But… in the end, I guess  there were so many things to comment on that it was kind of difficult to organize my thoughts -or make time for it-.

Anyway, with its  firey premiere -pun totally intended- Agent´s of S.H.I.E.L.D kind of set its own bar pretty high; ´cause that episode seemed to make a very good use of its new timeslot and take some giant steps into transforming the series on a more mature, grittier and edgier version of itself.

Now, reinventing a series isn´t easy to accomplish; therefore it´s not surprising at all that many  tuned in just to see if AoS would make it or stumbled; only to be surprised with the excellent episode delivered.

I for my part, wasn´t that surprised ´cause if there´s something AoS has done well since it´s 2nd season; it´s premieres and midseason finales -although to be honest, the midseason thing has been going since the 1st season-. Which is to say that AoS generally has excellent first half seasons -with the exception of the mentioned 1st one-

So.. in the end, the real challenge for this series is to keep things up  after the midseason finale and not to slow down significantly during the 22 episodes that it usually has. But I digress so let´s leave that aside for the moment and dig into episode 2: Meet The New Boss.

Tarquin Jenkins and the Book of Dreams by Peter Ford

Loved it-hated it

Be careful what you wish for, ´cause you might get it all.

It might sound like a cliche, but honestly speaking I would bet that was what passed through Tarquin´s mind more than once through Tarquin Jenkins and The Book of Dreams, as it was pretty much the first thing that came to my mind after reading this book; one that once again I had the opportunity to read thanks to @Booktasters and the author himself.

Which is why  I´m ashamed to admit that this review has been way overdue, -´cause I got this book a couple of months ago- and I´m just now writing about it; something that hasn´t been for lack of trying!, except it kind o has. Because while I was initially interested in the book due to its concept -a history loving geek traveling through time!-, reading it turned out to be quite difficult. Continue reading

Agent´s of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 Episode 1 “The Ghost”.- A Hell of a Premiere

For reasons, I can´t quite discern right now. Last season I didn´t review Agent´s of S.H.I.E.L.D. as much as I would have liked, and I like the series!

Then again, after the Mid-season finale, the series kind of went downhill and lost a little steam due to the long hiatus, the Ward/Hive story arc and then there was the “Fallen Agent” thing -not a fan, they totally cheated!-, and well… I like this series and it still is one of my favorites but my friends and I have long discussed how AoS seems to do better at the Mid-season finales than the actual season finales.

agents-of-shield-season-4-posterAnyhow, while not exactly disappointing -again I liked last season and truly enjoy this series-, last season left us a little unsure about the future of this series, what with Agent Carter being cancel -I´m still in mourning- ABC deciding to pass once again on the Marvel´s Most Wanted series -not really surprised, nor sorry at all for that one- and then… AoS was moved to the 10 pm time slot.

There was some arguing on whether this change of schedule meant that ABC was setting the show to die or giving it a chance to be darker, grittier and edgier. And then, Ghost Rider was announced as part of season 4 and after having seen the premiere, I can say I really hope is the later, ´cause Agent´s of S.H.I.E.L.D. seems to have really stepped up its game!
