New Year, New Reads!

 

A new year means new beginnings, right? as well as new resolutions. So this year for me it means actively working my way down on all the books I have stocked in my TBR list, therefore this year my monthly list will be full of books I haven’t managed to read, as well as some New Releases.

Also, due to lack of time and me starting in a new position at my job, well…, the monthly book lists will be shorter than in the past, but hopefully this will also mean that more book reviews will make their way into the blog! So… there’s that.

Anyhow, without further ado, here’s my January TBR for 2019!

New Year, new blog?

Well, it’s been quite a while since I started this blog as an exercise to improve my English and just bent and share my thoughts with people, without letting my shyness get the best of me.

But things have changed now, I feel a little more comfortable in my skin, and sadly don’t have the time I thought I would, so….. I decided some changes were needed in order for me to keep writing.

For a while, I thought about scrapping this blog and starting a new one, but… I didn’t want to get rid of all my earlier posts, therefore, after thinking about it for a while, I settled for rebranding.

So… Jewel Geekyshelf will now be GGS: A Girl’s Geeky Shelf, a blog that will also have a Spanish partner, where I’ll write stuff in my 1st language.

I’ll Try to make these changes gradually, to see what works and what doesn’t, as well as too hopefully keep my readers -if there are still any- and not confuse them.

So… here’s for hopefully an awesome year, a fulfilling new experience blogging and many more adventures to come.

Is Begining To Smell A Lot Like… Christmas Books!

Christmas is here! Well… according to stores in my country, and Netflix. Christmas has been here pretty much since late October/early November, but as someone who likes to celebrate Christmas on Christmas, and gives their time to Halloween and Día de Muertos, yeah, Christmas is just arriving.

Therefore once again I have a list of books I’m hoping I’ll be able to read before the year ends somewhen between all the work I have to do, the visiting family thing, making dinner, baking cookies, receiving guests at home, etc.

But since I’m nothing if not hopeful, and maybe a little ambitious here’s my December TBR list, all of it, winter or Christmas related!

October Books to Trick or Treat

Take out the bats, pumpkins, black cats and all of the candy! ‘Cause Halloween is pretty much here! And since last year I couldn’t make my TBR list, this year I decided to go full on and read as many books as possible.

So this month is all about monsters and things that bump in the night, with one exception which though not about monsters is kind of relevant to October’s celebrations.

Anyhow, without furder ado, here are my picks for this month’s monstrous read:

¡Viva México! 15 de Septiembre.- Mexico’s Independece (Independencia de México)

I want to be clear here and explain to those who might not know; we Mexicans don’t really celebrate 5 de mayo.

Yes, it’s a relevant and historical date, we learn at school what happened back then in 1862. But that’s pretty much it, I mean I guess that in Puebla -where the infamous battle took place- they make a bigger deal out of it, but as for the rest of the country…, it’s just more of a commemorative day, there are military or school parades, if that. It’s not necessarily a no-labor day.

Ok, quiero ser y explicarle a todos aquello que tal vez no sepan, que nosotros los Méxicanos no celebramos realmente el 5 de mayo.

Sí, es una fecha relevante e historica, y en la escuela aprendemos sobre lo que ocurrio en 1862. Pero eso es practicamente todo, qiero decir tal vez en Puebla -donde la infame batalla tuvo lugar- sea más importante y tengan una gran celebración, pero para el resto del país…, es solo otro día conmemorativo, hay desfiles militares o escolares, si al caso. No es necesariamente un día no laboral.

Back to School with September Books

So, I totally missed the August TBR list, which doesn’t mean I didn’t read plenty of books, just that I didn’t have time to write about it; but now that I seem to have a little more time I´m back with my September list.

And since in my country this month is pretty much about going back to school, well… I decided it was the perfect time to read the books I have that have something to do with it, so…. here we are:

Shounen-ai/Yaoi Mangas that Should Definitely be Animes! Pt2.- Border by Kodaka Kazuma

Last time, I made a post about how quite honestly compared to yuri or shoujo-ai animes out there, there’s not enough BL -boys love- stories out there, being made into animes, and though that has been slowly, but surely changing -this year we have 3 yaoi animes to look forward to-.

That being said, the thing is that the majority of the stories that are being adapted, aren’t necessarily rich in well… story -baring some exceptions-, and are still mainly in the same BL cliché of having a particularly feminine bottom, a strong, possessive on more masculine top, and the relationship beginning pretty much with plain out rape.

Which is why a while ago I decided to post what I think as BL mangas that don’t necessarily follow this tropes, and I think would work pretty well as animes.

Last time I wrote about Asterisk, a shounen-ai by Morimoto Shuu. So… this time around I decided to go for a yaoi: Border by Kodaka Kazuma

Onto the End of the Line.- Voltron Legendary Defender Season 7 Review

A lot has been happening in the Voltron fandom since season 7 was released, as always via Netflix. So… I decided to give it some time before I wrote down my thoughts, and why not? Rewatch it a couple of times.

Originally, I was intending to post my review a month after season 7’s release, but in the end, there are so many things to discuss and theorize about, that I simply couldn’t wait anymore!

So… did I loved Season 7? Did I absolutely hate it? Well…, my thoughts on it are a little complicated, and here’s why:

Go Go Power Rangers: Returning to the Grid

Back in the day, I was a big Power Rangers fan, in fact, scratch that, I was a big Power Rangers fan, probably longer than it’s acceptable for anyone to be nowadays.

I watched almost all of them consecutively, from Mighty Morphing Power Rangers to Power Rangers Dino Thunder, and watched some episodes of Mystic Force, SPD, RPM, and Jungle Fury thrown here and there.

Power Rangers became kind of a guilty pleasure to me, which is why it kind of baffles me that I didn’t read this comic ’til about 2 weeks ago.

I mean I knew about its existence, but to be honest it really didn’t pick my interest mainly because I thought I was finally done with all things Power Rangers -with exception of the movie- and… I haven’t been a fan of most of the TV to Comic adaptations, but then… the trailer for Shattered Grid dropped.

So, of course, I had to check what it was all really about and pick up the comic, and in order to have a full understanding about what was happening, eventually read the previous issues, and you know what, it was totally worth it!
